Why Every Young Musician Should Join an Orchestra: 10 Benefits Parents Need to Know!

I strongly encourage students to participate in an orchestra, and I’d love to share my own experience. When I was a child, our music class orchestra started in third grade. Back then, I was so determined not to embarrass myself during the excerpt test in front of the entire orchestra that I practiced the orchestral excerpts even more diligently than my own assignments. 😅

Later on, I joined the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, which gave me the opportunity to connect with many international musicians. For example, I remember playing with Yu-Chien Tseng, who was just a little kid back then but has now become a renowned violinist. Being in the orchestra also allowed me to perform at Taiwan’s National Concert Hall every season, making the stage feel as familiar as my own kitchen.

Participating in an orchestra offers many benefits for children learning an instrument. It enhances their musical abilities and fosters personal growth. Here are some key advantages:

🎻 Musical Development

Ensemble Skills: Learning to play in sync with others improves listening abilities and musical coordination.

Being in an orchestra not only elevates a child’s musical abilities but also shapes them into disciplined, cooperative, and confident individuals. These experiences will benefit them for a lifetime, even if they don’t pursue a professional music career!
